About Us

The Moorings was signed sealed & delivered into our hands in the early spring of 1999, fulfilling what was for both of us a long held ambition to own a restaurant, and in Angela’s case preferably “The Moorings”!

Having been a regular visitor to the North Norfolk Coast she had always thought the Moorings would be a great spot to own one day, and of course, she is very rarely wrong!!

There have however been a few twists and turns along the way that brought us to this wonderful little haven for food lovers in North Norfolk, and we will share some of these with you.

Angela

“Born & bred in Pennine Yorkshire, I came to catering quite ‘late on’; it was whilst living the life of Riley in South America that I decided to give it all up, head home and using a few ‘Hilton ‘ connections, managed to secure myself a job and a place at college.

Never being one to stand still, the three year chefs course was completed in one, and with a qualification in hand I headed for a job with ‘Hilton’ in New York.

Richard and I arrived on virtually the same plane and the rest, as they say, is history!”

Richard

“As a boy growing up in rural Suffolk, cooking was always an interest, but it was during an extended gap year in Australia that I finally decided that catering was for me. With 12,000 miles between us, I found it much easier than expected to inform my father that unlike other old Etonians, I would pass on the university place and job in the city, and opt instead for Westminster College.

Three years later I emerged with their chef’s diploma and the chance to join ‘Hilton’ at their Park Lane hotel.

The four years at park Lane were spent working with a team of vibrant French & Italian chefs in the ‘Windows of the World’ restaurant. There I was quick to learn how to work hard and to play hard; it was a fantastic experience.

The chance of a move to New York came up, and so with a bit of knowledge and a huge overdraft I jumped at the chance. That’s where I met a straight talking Yorkshire woman named Angela.

We found we shared many interests including our love of cooking, and our two years in New York were a wonderful and exciting time!”

“In 1992 we came back to the Yorkshire moors, bought a hill farm, two dozen chickens, a few sheep and a couple of pigs, and lived ‘The Good Life’ whilst still working for ‘Hilton’.

We managed to find time to produce two wonderful daughters and some fantastic pork, but our dream had always been to run our own restaurant.

It was then, with very little hesitation, that we jumped at the chance to get ‘The Moorings’ when it presented itself.

We may have set off with no money, but we did have a family, a vision, a bit of experience and a bucket load of enthusiasm, and we are now really lucky and happy to be living our dream.”

We don’t strive to achieve rosettes, stars, or international TV fame for ourselves or the restaurant. We do strive very hard to provide all our guests with wonderful, simply cooked, fresh and wherever possible, local food, that we enjoy cooking.

We do what we do because we believe in our cooking and enjoy sharing it with our customers. We aim to create a relaxed atmosphere, and everyone is welcome, whether for a cappuccino and morning papers, a lunchtime chowder and chatter with the family, or an outstanding supper with friends.

Our menus are inclined toward local fish and shellfish, often bought straight off the boats, and we are lucky to have the most wonderful winter game. Our puddings are renowned, and your only disappointment will be if you don’t leave room for one.

Of course, we could go on all day but we don’t find it at all easy to talk about ourselves. So we look forward to welcoming you soon to our wonderful little corner of North Norfolk.
